Coating toughens fragile glass exterior

Article Abstract:

British Technology Group is seeking to commercialise a new coating for glass which can 'heal' flaws in the surface and increase glass container burst strength by a maximum of 50%. The coating, developed by the University of Sheffield, is an aqueous emulsion of a polymerisable silane coupling element and an epoxy resin. No solvents are involved in the production of the coating. The coating integrates with the glass to give much stronger bonds. The coating is only microns thick, and can be applied by spraying or dipping.

The glass necklace

Article Abstract:

The undersea lightwave communication system known as fiber-optic link around the globe (FLAG) is the longest man-made structure. The transoceanic optical-fiber cable technology has been used in FLAG. Undersea repeaters, cable and terminal equipment are the components of FLAG and make the Trans-Pacific 5 network. Hair-thin optical fibers are made from silicon dioxide boules protected with a plastic coating. High natural strength is maintained within the fiber as it remain untouched by human hand.

The glass cockpit

Article Abstract:

The automated cockpits of new aircrafts are designed to make the planes safer and cheaper to fly, but pilots having trouble using the new systems have been responsible for accidents. Complex navigation systems and high tech instrument gauges have confused pilots and studies show such automations increased pilots' complacency and thus increased accidents. Designers are working to make systems less complex, with better layouts.
