Testing the waters

Article Abstract:

Geographic information systems (GIS) could be used in shared networks across the UK. This could be carried out through the Internet. There is a large amount of information available on the UK coastline and it has tended to be stored in different places and diverse formats. A UK body would have to be set up if a national network were to be developed. The body would provide a framework for links on the network, and an address, and would perform other tasks such as updating links and coordinating organizations taking part.

Testing Response of Handicapped

Article Abstract:

A microprocessor-based instrument developed at the Children's Hospital of Stanford University tests the ability of a handicapped person to respond to a variety of controls. The instrument, which fits in a suitcase, has a program in four kilobytes of memory that uses a variety of switches, keyboards, and joysticks to evaluate how best for the patient to control his or her wheelchair. A score is compiled by the microprocessor. A diagram illustrates the system.

A future for the past

Article Abstract:

Geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to protect historic resources by allowing planners to collect data and be able to give rapid answers to real estate developers. This access to information means that delays are minimised when ruins are discovered. The Urban Archaeological Database has been developed by the St Albans Dustrict Council, England, together with English Heritage, to gather information on St Albans' history and protect local sites.
