Ion beam keeps liquid crystals in line: Is science soon to replace art in making LCD displays?

Article Abstract:

Physicist Praveen Chaudhari, based at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center, heads a scattered group of IBM researchers experimenting with ways to speed production and minimize defects in liquid-crystal displays (LCD). An ion-beam alignment method shows much promise and could be licensed by IBM to other display manufacturers.

Display technology cuts projection TV costs

Article Abstract:

Display developer Philips Components says thin projection TVs are being developed that could bring prices of high-resolution, large-screen television sets down, making them affordable for many more viewers. The key, says Philips, is a new liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) display that puts 1280 by 768 pixels on a panel measuring 30 mm on the diagonal.
