Concurrent engineering: defining terms and techniques

Article Abstract:

Concurrent engineering techniques make it possible to view a wide range of issues entailed in the product development process simultaneously rather than focusing on one area of concern at a time, as is done using traditional methods. Use of a graphical element helps the team visualize elements and relationships in a multidisciplinary design solution, and while the methods are now manual, they will eventually be integrated with design automation tools, computer-aided manufacturing systems and information management tools designed specifically for concurrent engineering. Terms related to concurrent engineering are defined; these include quality function deployment, design for manufacture and assembly, robust design, quality loss function, signal-to-noise ratio, experiment by orthogonal arrays, statistical process control, Ishikawa's seven tools, fishbone diagram, continuous process improvement, just-in-time delivery and total quality management.

The Darpa initiative: encouraging new industrial practices

Article Abstract:

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) Initiative in Concurrent Engineering (DICE) is intended to encourage the practice of concurrent engineering in the US military and industrial base. Included in DICE's plans are developing, integrating and disseminating technologies for concurrent engineering and applying them to weapons systems development. DICE focuses specifically on the practice of considering all aspects of a product concurrently, including manufacturing and logistics, to encourage high quality, low cost and short time to market. DICE is conducted for Darpa by a consortium of over 12 industries, software companies and universities; the goal of the consortium is to develop an architecture for concurrent engineering that supports people working together on a project and lets them communicate with each other and access, share and store up-to-date information in a transparent way, regardless of geographic location.
