Congress to address reformulated gasoline

Article Abstract:

Ten bills have so far been introduced in the 106th Congress that seek a ban on the use of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) as an additive in reformulated gasoline. The bills filed by Rep Brian Bilbray and Sen Diane Feinstein will allow California to legislate its own rules on reformulated gasoline as long as emissions reductions are equivalent or greater. The bill introduced by Rep Barney Frank calls for the outright prohibition of MTBE while Sen Barbara Boxer wants a gradual phaseout of MTBE by amending the Toxic Substances Control Act.
