Designing circuit boards for manufacturability

Article Abstract:

Mentor Graphics Corp introduces the $16,900 Manufacturing Advisor/PCB (MA/PCB) software package, which helps printed circuit board (PCB) designers to assess the manufacturability of their designs at an early stage. Design for manufacturability enables designers to control product quality, production requirements, costs and delivery schedules. MA/PCB capabilities include analyzing the design based on the parts selected from a library of over 800 package styles representing tens of thousands of components, monitoring of placement area consumed as parts are placed and determining if parts can be automatically inserted The software can also identify components that require more labor, special manufacturing processes, more rework or that do not comply with standards. What-if analyses can be interactively performed to assess the impact of alternative designs. An overall manufacturability score is provided for each design.

Simulating EM fields

Article Abstract:

Simulation and analysis software tools for electromagnetic (EM) fields help engineers visualize and manipulate the EM fields and design products without the extensive testing and redesign processes. Parametric Integrated Circuits Inc's ParICs software relieves chip package designers of having to enter package geometries into an EM analysis system. Two-dimensional cross-section solver software from Contec Microelectronics USA Inc works with the company's ContecSpice and generates inductance, conductance, capacitance and resistance matrices for an arbitrary cross section of uniform transmission lines. Large-scale digital design is best performed in three tiers, involving block designs, the autorouting stage and the analysis of critical paths. Quantic Laboratories Inc's Broad-Scan and Greenfield software, and a tool suite from Quad Design Technology Inc, address all three tiers.
