Digital TV in the U.S

Article Abstract:

Digital television (DTV) programming is offered in few locations, but there are reasons to buy the sets, which cost more than $7000, anyway. They can be considered a down payment for the future. TV makers are offering flexible ways to acquire DTV and they offers ways to keep fear of obsolescence in abeyance. So-called integrated sets have DTV decoders built in and are usually large widescreen rear-projection models. More models have an optional outboard module, a set-top box for digital broadcasts. Both kinds can use any one of the 18 high- and standard-definition TV (HDTV and SDTV) signal formats the Advanced Television Systems Committee has approved. Probably only four will be transmitted. Tables list formats and brands, models, types, sizes, and types of displays with prices.

Consumer electronics

Article Abstract:

Consumer electronics is an industry defined by its latest accomplishments and 1999 will be a banner year. Retail sales of all digital products except digital television are expected to be high as even early adopters hold off with good reason, that will not last too long. New devices are to be introduced to consumers in 1999, among them video games, portable audio and electronic books from NuvoMedia. Lego will bring out robotics technology toys, Mindstorms, with a PC-programmable microcomputer and environmental sensors to turn creations on and off.
