Honda's latest electric wheel motor with incorporated gear-box and drive is expected to become extremely popular in small vehicle applications such as wheelchairs, golf carts and amusement park vehicles. It is reliable, efficient, has a low friction design and is light to handle. It has a built-in halt mechanism which is enabled when over-heating occurs and can use either a 12 or 24 volts electrical supply.

Linear motors, which are basically rotary motors that have been cut and flattened, are now being used as alternatives to ball-and-roller screws for linear motion. Linear motors convert electrical energy directly to linear mechanical force, are coupled to the load directly, and have no compliance, windup, wear, and lubrication, and little or no maintenance cost.

An overview is provided of the correct procedures for sizing and applying a linear motor. The overview uses an example of a 50kg load that must move 500mm in 250ms, dwell for 275ms, and then repeat the process, and discusses the size of the linear motor that is needed and the force that is required for the procedure.
