EPA gives metal finishers more flexibility

Article Abstract:

Metal finishers can now accumulate F006 sludges for up to 180 days without a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste-storage permit or interim status. The previous rule only allowed the accumulation of F006 waste on-site without a RCRA permit for up to 90 days only. Metal finishers had complained that the 90-day restriction constrained their ability to hoard a large enough volume of sludge for recycling purposes.

Process protects against corrosion

Article Abstract:

G Kane Jennings, an assistant professor at Nashville, TN-based Vanderbilt University, has developed a water-based metal-coating method that forms a more resilient barrier to protect the metal from corrosion. The method is touted to be an improvement over traditional methods of forming protective barriers of self-assembled monolayers on metal surfaces. In addition, the method is expected to produce a more defect-free structure.
