Hong Kong moves to build information infrastructure

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong Information Infrastructure Exposition and Conference held in Feb 1998 tackled the development of an information infrastructure in the former colony. The event focused on the technological, social, educational, legal, industrial and commercial, and administrative factors related to an information-based society like Hong Kong. The overall goal of the expo and conference was to promote the collection, distribution, access to and application of information in everyday life.

More U.S. graduates returning to China

Article Abstract:

The number of mainland Chinese students studying in Western universities is quite large, considering that China's los educational standards and its reputation for ideological control. The number of mainland Chinese students studying in US universities in 1993-94 was 44,400, a drop of 1.7% over 1992-93. Comprising 58% of foreign enrollment in the US, the Chinese are the biggest group of foreign students in the US, followed by Japanese, Taiwanese and Indian students.

China traditions oppose war on IP piracy

Article Abstract:

A potentially disastrous trade war between the US and China was averted after the two countries were able to forge an agreement in negotiations in Hong Kong. However, tensions between the two countries remained high as both sides examined the provisions they agreed to in the agreement. Less than two weeks after the agreement's signing, the signatories were again at odds over China's refusal to honor its commitment to reduce import quotas and trade barriers.
