Neutral born winners

Article Abstract:

The UK and Ireland gained special national concessions in BS EN 610091: 1995 for continuing usage of residual current devices with overcurrent protection (rcbos) with solid neutrals rather than switched neutrals. There are good reasons for coming into line with the rest of Europe and changing to switched neutrals. The solid neutral rcbo offers an advantage of compactness but the switched neutral device offers safety and operational advantages in the case of neutral to earth faults. There are are also design advantages which may outweigh the size factor.

Q&A

Article Abstract:

An electrical contract manager, about to work in mainland Europe, feels they may face pressure to use the miniature circuit breaker type protection and asks for advice on the subject. An expert describes the superior safety of fuse links over mini circuit breakers, and introduces other points which might persuade the client to opt for fuses. These include the cosmetic and technological advantages of modular fuse holders, together with the facility for speedy identification of problems.
