Europe's silicon star rises

Article Abstract:

The semiconductor business of the European region continues to relatively fare well amidst the detrimental effects of maturing computer markets, RAM-chip oversupply and Asia's currency crisis on the global semiconductor industry. The semiconductor business of Europe continues to hold its own with the rest of the world's semiconductor industries, with the region's semiconductor sector emerging as the least affected by the worldwide market decline for semiconductors. The relatively-healthy state of the semiconductor business in Europe is attributed to the region's capability to manufacture specialty integrated circuits that are not limited to computers in terms of applications. Europe likewise basically enjoys healthy economic conditions, which generates feelings of optimism regarding the state of the region's semiconductor business.

Biology 101 on the Internet: dissecting the Pentium bug

Article Abstract:

Professor Thomas R. Nicely, professor of mathematics at Lynchburg College, VA, has discovered a bug in the Pentium microprocessor. The bug has also been detected by other scientists and engineers using the Pentium chip for complex mathematical calculations. The bug distorts the program and provides inaccurate results. Though Intel Corp refused to acknowledge the existence of a bug, it has now offered to replace all faulty chips.
