Fastener act called 'absurd.' (Fastener Quality Act of 1990)

Article Abstract:

The amended Fastener Quality Act (FQA) of 1990 received intense criticism from many in the fastener, aerospace and automobile industries. Rob Harris, managing director of the Industrial Fasteners Institute, clarified that the amended final rule fails to respond to the core problem of overseas firms that export faulty fasteners. However, according to an official from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD, the FQA offers safety measures for fasteners to ensure they are made correctly.

Commerce submits fastener act report

Article Abstract:

The Dept of Commerce has appealed to Congress to make major amendments of the Fastener Quality Act (FQA) of 1990. The fastener industry, which agrees with the department's reason for updates due partly to technological advancements, however, is not satisfied with the content of the report. Allegedly, the report failed to create conditions that will delimit burdens in the industry especially regarding the export of fraudulent fasteners by international export companies.

To boost fastener quality use thread gaging

Article Abstract:

Fastener manufacturers who produce quality screw threads derive many benefits in the highly competitive business climate of the late 1990s. Many fastener makers use simple go/no-go gages to evaluate fastener quality but this strategy does not satisfy all the information needed to gauge required thread size tolerance limits or thread form variation measurements. Using indicating-type thread gaging systems can enable these firms to enhance fastener quality.
