Faster technology commercialization vital for next century, Macau and St. Petersburg meetings told

Article Abstract:

Highlights of two conferences on technology held in Macau and St. Petersburg in July 1997 are described. Delegates in the Macau conference focused on the processes involved in technology research, management and commercialization. As a result of the conference, initiatives were undertaken promoting Macau as a bridge in the commercialization of technology accomplishments in China. On the other hand, the conference at St. Petersburg emphasized the technology potential of Russia and cited conditions for enhancing Russia's economy.

Strategic alliances, one of business' major aspects, must be carefully planned in order to maximize their chances of success. Steps that should be taken when considering an alliance include the creation of a set vision, goals and criteria for success in the endeavor. The others are realism in setting targets, budgets and manpower needs, an effective organization with defined responsibilities, a system for rewarding competence and efforts aimed at fostering and maintaining trust.

Licensing proprietary technology is a profit opportunity, not a threat

Article Abstract:

Licensing of innovative technologies to other companies, even to rival organizations, offers opportunities for profits for the owner of the technology. The process, which offers a quick return on R&D investments, is also vital for the easy implementation of whatever innovation is discovered for the benefit of industry and society in general. Licensing of technology, far from being a threat, is actually one of the drivers of growth in the western world.
