Faults & failures: Pentium serial number pains privacy groups

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp. has a public relations problem because of the unique serial number, the processor serial number (PSN), it has applied to each Pentium III microprocessor chip. The numbers are accessible over the Internet and private networks. Intel presented them as something organizations could use to improve security as well as to manage information and equipment. Privacy groups demanded the PSN be disabled, so Intel developed a utility enabling users to control which Web sites or software programs could read PSNs. The utility, however, was vulnerable to hacking and groups found ways to get around it and get access to the number without consent or knowledge of the owner of the PC in which it resided. Various efforts have been made to get rid of some of the problems, with various degrees of success. Companies mentioned in the article include Zero-Knowledge Systems (Montreal) and Symantec, and a German magazine, 'c't magazin fur computer technik,' is mentioned.
