Fire-alarm paging system baptized by fire

Article Abstract:

The Fauquier Hospital in Washington DC was able to derive the maximum benefit from its recently installed smoke-detection equipment following an unexpected fire at the facility. The online, addressable heat-and-smoke detection device is equipped with a paging module that automatically notifies key hospital staff of the danger of fire. Fauquier's fire-alarm system is also capable of distinguishing between true fires and deceptive phenomena, a feature that reduces the incidence of false alarms.

How to detect a fire before it happens

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the US Dept of Energy's Jefferson Lab have developed a technique for using a commercially available Fourier transform infrared spectrometer to sense gases given off by combustible material when subjected to heat. The equipment has been calibrated to detect the combination of gases emitted by a particular material by its absorption wavelength and therefore can detect fire before it has even started.
