U.S. display industry on the edge

Article Abstract:

The targeting of industry-government tie-up programs for flat panel displays (FPD) by the new leadership in the US House of Representatives has affected the modernisation plans of the Defense Dept and created doubts towards achieving a 15% market share sought by the Commerce Dept. Japan with a FPD sales of 95% in 1994 has no major research programs while Korea aided by its government is keen on seizing a chunk of the market. Activities of display organizations in the US are discussed.

The flowering of flat displays

Article Abstract:

Flat-panel displays have improved in visual effect, energy-efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Plasma display panels are increasingly popular on a variety of products such as the wall screen, televisions and computer display units. They use low-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistors and active-matrix liquid-crystal display technology. Other display technologies include field-emission displays. Display parameters and applications are discussed.
