Article Abstract:

The last 25 years of electrical engineering had both high and low points, several of which are briefly described. Among the low points was the failure of the Illiac IV to achieve its performance goals, the similar failure of the Sergeant York gun, the New York blackout of 1965, the outrageous costs of purchases by the Pentagon, and the non-performance of the $5.3 billion-plus Shoreham nuclear power plant. Engineering achievements include the world's largest hydroelectric power plant on the border of Brazin and Paraguay, the two Voyager spacecraft, Texas Instruments' Speak & Spell toy, and the French National Railroad's 170mph TGV train. Several other good and not-so-good events are described.

Do the Russians really save that much? Alternate estimates from the Russian longitudinal monitoring survey

Article Abstract:

Four thousand Russian households were surveyed to determine savings behavior. The 12% household savings rate was shown to be less than the official figure of 29%, and it was surmised that this low rate may be explained by a deterioration in Russian life expectancies.
