The use of ceramics is not widespread because of processing difficulties but researchers at DaimlerChrysler believe they have solved the problem. They are using a high-performance laser to soften the edges of the material, making it easier to machine. Possible applications for the new process include the manufacture of engine valves. Meanwhile, researchers at the US Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory have developed a strong adhesive that joins ceramic components. Such a glue could be used in a variety of applications.

Liquid cooling - or a load of hot air

Article Abstract:

Rockwell Automation has developed a liquid-cooled AC drive which it claims is the industry's smallest HP/sq in footprint. The Liquiflo has a multi-layered DC bus which reduces wiring complexity and removes the need for snubbers. The new device is aimed at industrial sectors such as electric vehicles, petrochemical plants and water pumping systems.
