Learning from the Hantzsch synthesis

Article Abstract:

The efficient, reliable, straighforward Hantzsch synthesis, long known, continues to teach how small organic molecules can act as medicines. Arthur Hantzsch found the useful method for pyridine synthesis according to a professor of chemistry at the University of Idaho. It has application in studying multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapy in that 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs), isolable intermediates, can be leads. DHPs also are useful in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and adenosine receptor antagonists. Four main classes of Hantzsch esters with useful biological activities have been studied. Antihypertensives are most widely studied. Nifedipine is a well-known example. Topics include structure-activity relationships, site-directed mutagenesis, and the binding site, side effects and the calcium channel as a target

Exploiting entropy to separate alkane isomers

Article Abstract:

Entropy may be used to separate alkane isomers, branched from straight-chain, based on molecular packing efficiencies and preferential adsorption. Few data can be found for mixture isotherm, though threre are many data on pure component isotherms for various hydrocarbons on silicalite. Experimnents are difficult in this area. Mixture isotherms were thus calculated using configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations (CBMC). Topics include pentanes and heptanes, (CBMC) mixture simulations, configurational entropy effects on adsorption.

Monetizing intellectual property

Article Abstract:

This article examines the swift in the chemical industry's focus in economic output to that of knowledge economy that emphasizes capitalizing industry's intellectual property. This is a departure from the traditional "invent itsell it" model and emphasizes on converting intellectual property into products by way of technology licensing.
