Fringe benefits of regeneration: the problem of regeneration in the EU's peripheral regions was the main issue at this month's Association of European Schools of Planning conference

Article Abstract:

The Association of European Planning School held its annual congress at Strathclyde University, with an opening session on the subject of Glasgow in Europe - The Glasgow Regeneration Alliance. Each speaker focused on the role of partnerships in assisting economic, social and physical regeneration. Glasgow is a lead city in terms of urban renewal and regeneration although it has high unemployment, continuing poverty and a low rate of new company formation.

Regeneration of Kirkby town centre:(Planning Achievements Awards)

Article Abstract:

Kirkby town centre required drastic improvements as part of a strategy to cure the town's problems of unemployment, crime and vandalism.. Knowsley MBC worked in partnership with the agents of Jones Lang Wootton to bid for cash from the Urban Partnership Fund. The award was invested in improved security, new lighting, paving street furniture and public art.

Transport planning and regeneration

Article Abstract:

Transport provision will play an important role in regeneration, according to recent PPG6 pronouncements and the 'Transport and the environment' report by the Royal Commission. The provision of mixed use development needs to be given higher priority. Urban areas must keep their existing form. Public transport should operate across towns.
