Several guidelines for research and development managers indesigning the best possible patent strategy to be able to maintain competitive advantages are offered. Technology strategy, business strategy and patent strategy all input to each other and needs a thorough understanding of the environment and other external factors such as competitors, customers, suppliers and the existing patent base.

'Wish Program' for major innovations

Exxon Chemical Co.'s Wishing Program was aimed at enabling technology managers realize their creativity and take more active roles in the process of innovation. The program presupposes that creativity enhances innovation. It is founded on the assumption that exposing important needs to a large number of interested people increases the chances of having radical ideas developed.
