Green Belt under pressure from north west guidance: release of the north west's RPg has met with mixed responses over housing provision plans

Article Abstract:

The draft RPG for the north west provides safeguards for Green Belts but also calls for more development along the north/south corridor. The RPG differs greatly from Greener Growth, the North West Regional Association of Local Authorities advice note. It finds no evidence to suggest that there is a shortage of land and buildings in urban areas for future development needs, and this has been welcomed by the CPRE. However planners believe that the Green Belt should be reconsidered now.

PPG7's rural business use meets with mixed response

Article Abstract:

The UK government proposes a new rural business use class in its draft PPG7 guidelines on planning. The new class allows owners of agrarian buildings that have become derelict to use them for business purposes, while controlling traffic generation so protecting the countryside. Sussex's Rural Community Council head argues that the proposal will help foster business activity in rural areas. Critics argue that developers could take advantage of the change.

Mixed response to PPG6

Article Abstract:

Some observers feel that the UK government's new PPG6 planning guidance sets down rather unrealistic expectations of town centre strategies. There is also concern that definition of edge-of-centre has been changed from within 'reasonable' walking distance to within 'easy' walking distance. There have been claims that the emphasis on town centre sites is contrary to all available evidence on sustainability.
