Guidelines for selecting a dial indicator

Article Abstract:

Dial indicators must be assessed first in terms of their minimum graduation value, size, range per revolution and total range. The minimum graduation value must be the one nearest to 10% of the work's tolerance speed. The size must be based on available space and the distance where it will be seen. The range per revolution is chosen according to the size and minimum graduation required while total range averages 2 1/2 revolutions of the hand.

Get inside your indicator needs

Article Abstract:

Dial and digital indicators have their own benefits in the measurement process. Reading dial indicators demands a certain degree of skill and knowledge yet they are cheaper than digital ones and can withstand rugged conditions during field work. Digital indicators are more accurate and do not require training in reading their display. They are also capable of collecting and downloading data into statistical-process-control software.

Homemade gage gets molding process under control

Article Abstract:

Glen Gruner, currently of Grote Industries Inc. in Madison, IN, and his coworkers at the UFE Inc. in River Falls, WI, have built an inexpensive gage that improved process control and measurement time by 92% for the production of an actuator from an eight-cavity, injection-molding tool. The gage, costing less than $150, was built from a holding fixture and a digital indicator.
