Handhelds Duke It Out For the Internet

Article Abstract:

Wireless Internet access is the goal of manufacturers of both PDA's and next-generation cell phones. Cell phones will probably take the lead in this effort because of lower costs than PDA's despite drawbacks such as smaller screens. Cell phones are capable of accessing the Web and receiving messages over a larger area than most PDA's. Access through PDA's depends upon services such as Bell South's Mobitex which was originally created for two-way messaging. Due to lack of demand in other than urban areas, they did not put up additional transmitters-receviers that are needed for a RF network. Internet access ia also slow and limited. Qualcomm, Nokia and others are working on cell phones that have Internet access. Both PDA's and cell phones rely on such technologies as WAP (wireless application protocol), Bluetooth and iMode which is a new challenger from Japan.
