Hindsight is an exact science

Article Abstract:

A new chemistry database, Failed Reactions, from Accelrys Ltd., is intended to give useful information on reactions that don't work, arranged logically, according to the product manager for reaction databases of Accelrys, a subsidiary of Pharmacopeia Inc. Structure diagrams for the expected reaction, and for the products, if available, are given. Databases used by chemists usually focus on reactions that are successful. The path to a target molecule tends to be much less smooth and trouble-free than the literature would indicate. Many exceptions to the rules of organic synthesis exist. It is important to know which reactions do not work. Many companies archive such information and consider it as important and sensitive as information on what succeeds.
