How companies miss the boat on ISO 9000

Article Abstract:

Informal surveys of companies aiming at ISO 9000 certification reveals that most of them neglect employee participation in the certification process so that the certificate is reduced to solely a marketing tool. Implementation of ISO 9000 through employee participation creates a communication system and a flexible documentation mechanism. The system uses employees not only to monitor quality but also to gather and distribute information within and outside the company. ISO 9000 builds interpersonal communication and resolves political conflicts within the organization.

Late 1998 should prove a watershed for standards

Article Abstract:

The US and other countries are creating changes to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000 series. At the same time, industry sectors develop and enforce hybrids of international quality assurance standard. In particular, the standards conference entitled 'Toward a National Standards Strategy to Meet Global Needs' is expected to spearhead a two-year emphasis on standards with its focus on subjects such as the EU, the growing dominance of international standards, challenges to the ISO system and the ISO voting structure.

Industry leaders seek self-declaration in lab testing

Article Abstract:

Several telecommunications and high-tech companies are calling for a return to supplier's declaration of conformity (SDOC) including self-declaration lab testing and management system standards. The move, which is being supported by the Information Technology Industry Council and members of the Industry Cooperation for Standards and Conformity Assessment, is being driven by an industry need to reduce costs.
