How to avoid creating the dreaded "big honkin' binder." (writing quality manuals for ISO 9000 registration)

Article Abstract:

Companies seeking ISO 9000 registration are required to develop a quality manual. Unfortunately, these manuals tend to be written hastily in preparation for an impending audit, thus many of them end up as nothing but confusing, nonvalue-added documents. Guidelines for developing a good quality manual are presented. These include using cross-functional experts to write the manual, tailoring the manual to the organization's business, enlisting the assistance of a technical writer, and allowing the manual to be reviewed by different types of employees.

Competitive benchmarking: large gains for small companies

Article Abstract:

Benchmarking consists of identifying customers' needs, then the target market, then competitors' products in that market, then those products' defining attributes. Every company should know its competition, especially the best in its class. Small companies cannot afford not to do this; if a large company does not benchmark a component properly it will survive, but a small company making just that component cannot.
