How users view frameworks: a panel of experts on design automation see frameworks as the operating systems of the future

Article Abstract:

The engineering community is searching for frameworks that provide a simple way to share design data among tools from different vendors with the goal of improving design automation productivity. HP's James A. Wilmore says frameworks are domain independent because a user interface is required regardless of the designer's function, since tools need to interoperate. Steven E. Schulz of Texas Instruments Inc says his company would have preferred to wait for the full set of solutions from the Computer-aided-design Framework Initiative, rather than being forced into whatever mode was required at the time. Khanh Vu from Sun Microsystems Computer Corp believes that an enterprise-wide solution is effective, because a design change goes across multiple departments, which requires synchronization. Other views on frameworks are provided by Bosch GmbH's Darko Brodarac, Bell Northern Research's Norbert Diesing and State University of Paris-Nanterre's Roland Mercier.

Guide to engineering software

Article Abstract:

Significant updates in electrical and electronics software for microcomputers and workstations are the focus of the second annual report on engineering software. The software is divided into six categories, including computer-aided software engineering, logic simulation for application-specific integrated circuits, electromagnetic design and simulation, digital signal processors for embedded systems, math calculations and graphics for visualization, and data acquisition, analysis display and technical reporting. Representative packages and vendors in each area are featured in special tables.
