IEC 61508 to improve the design and use of 'smart' safety equipment

Article Abstract:

Members of the Geneva, Switzeland-based International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are set to vote on the remaining sections of IEC 61508. The proposed IEC standard uses process hazard analysis in the specification, design, operation and maintenance of smart safety equipment such as valves, sensors and programmable logic controllers. Passage of IEC 61508 will provide companies involved in the chemical processing, nuclear, aviation and machinery business a coherent framework of guidelines that will improve their safety and environmental performance.

Cold process kills food microbes

Article Abstract:

PoroCrit Inc of Berkeley, CA, has started commercializing a cold sterilization process for purifying fruit juices and other liquid food products. The continuous process, which uses compressed carbon dioxide to purify the fruit juices, is based on the ability of pressurized carbon dioxide to deactivate microbes in liquids. PoroCrit, which claims that the procedure cost less compared to heat pasteurization, has already built a pilot plant for Giivauden Roure Flavors Corp of Cincinnati, OH.

Ionic liquids take solar cells outdoors

Article Abstract:

Shaik Zakeeruddin and his colleagues at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne were able to develop a solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cell that could be suitable for outdoor applications. Tests on the solar cells revealed that these were stable at 80 degrees Celsius in the dark and 60 degrees Celsius in visible-light.
