Article Abstract:

Most people questioned in a survey undertaken by a team from Prism Research and the University of the West of England feel that the UK's planning system offers value for money and has produced improvements in the quality of developments. These results are contained in a recent department of the environment report entitled 'Attitudes to Town and Country Planning.' They will be welcomed by the planning profession, which now seems to have received vindication for its work.

Habitat's homeward journey on the Midnight Express: the compilation of the Habitat Agenda and the companion declaration nearly failed to hit its deadline

Article Abstract:

There were last minute arguments at the UN Habitat conference over the texts of the Instanbul Declaration and the Habitat Agenda. The texts were approved although they have not yet been issued. The agenda will set out general goals for improving cities and a global plan of action. RTPI president Cliff Hague believes there should now be a new relationship between central and local government and NGOs and new thinking about developing equitable cities.

Tory tips and grassroots guidance

Article Abstract:

Conservative Central Office has published Local Government - the Conservative Approach. Thirteen councillors have contributed to the publication. The guidelines are seen as surveying Conservatism in local government, and theoretical basis as attention to speed and price of services, with minimal consideration to variations occurring within social or environmental elements.
