Inching force motor never lets go

Article Abstract:

DynaMotive Corporation (Canada) has developed a 1kN linear actuator, which changes the shape of a 9 mm metal rod by passing a relaxed grip along its length, according to the company's Reinhold Roth. It is also developing a 2kN version, and a 5kN version with a rod 18 mm in diameter. DynaMotive plan a new 10kN actuator for 1993. The designs operate at between 3-5 mm/sec, but this may be raised to 20 mm/sec later. DynaMotive's 'elastic wave motor' has a 1,000 times/sec frequency response. The company's actuators with a 1kN rating weigh under 2 kgs, are 230 mm in length, and 50 mm in diameter.

The moving finger points the way ahead

Article Abstract:

The University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering and Department of Chemistry are collaborating on developing microscopic actuators that respond to gas, chemicals, light, heat, magnetic fields and humidity. The micro-cantilevers are composed of a silicon-based substrate coated with another substance that changes in volume when influenced externally. The light activating material used is a semiconducting glass made of equal proportions of selenium and arsenic. Potential applications for the new technology include disc drive read heads and other micro-actuating uses.

Air power boosts electric actuator

Article Abstract:

Pemram actuators are a new type of actuator consisting of a linear electric motor which doubles as a pneumatic cylinder. The novel design offers fluid power force and also precise and swift positioning, and potential applications include robotics, moving platform simulators and the medical industry. The concept was developed by Phillip Denne, who is now working with Lotus Engineering, automotive firm, to develop a 150kgf magnetic thrust, 300kgf pneumatic force version. Technical details are further discussed.
