Industrial electronics

Article Abstract:

Significant industrial electronics product developments and introductions in 1991 included development of fuzzy logic controls, greater use of distributed logic control, the advent of low-cost machine vision boards, introduction of X-ray laminography technologies for viewing the interior of solder joints, a human recognition system for robots and use of digital signal processors (DSPs) to implement constant speed control in robots and other systems. Fuzzy logic control revenues are expected to grow from 1990's $1.5 billion to $13 billion in the year 2,000. New fuzzy logic control products from GE Fanuc Automation and Omron Electronics Inc are briefly described. Cognex Corp introduced its low-cost models 4100 and 4200 vision boards for VMEbus-based computers. Four Pi Systems and IRT Corp introduced x-ray laminography systems, respectively the 3DX Series 1500C and CXI-03300. Kobe University's (Kobe, Japan) Dept of Instrumentation Engineering developed a human recognition system that will enable robots to avoid injuring people. DSP control system developments are also discussed.

Industrial electronics

Article Abstract:

Industrial automation equipment sales fell 2.9 percent in the first nine months of 1992 compared with the same period in 1991. Advances were made in industrial electronics in 1992: improved numerical control precision, higher level programming for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), more efficient machine vision, reduced false accept and reject ratios in X-ray laminography, and high-wattage power electronic devices. In 1991 the investment in industrial automation equipment and services in the US was almost $40 billion, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association; this figure represents a $7 billion increase from 1989 investments. PLC manufacturers now emphasize improved graphical user interfaces, ease of programming, error correction and communications capabilities.
