Information technology/information systems in 21st century manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Information technology and systems (IT/IS) permeate almost all business processes and functions including manufacturing within industrialized nations. The supportive function of IT/IS in moving information is crucial in production because in manufacturing moves before information moves. There are many valid approaches to the development of IT/IS strategy in manufacturing concerns. If researchers can therefore identify best practices in IT/IS strategy development, then they will have created a starting point for thinking about best practices for 21st century production strategy.

Document-centered information systems to support reactive problem-solving in manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Manufacturing industries need to share and coordinate information effectively to increase their production efficiencies and competitiveness. Information systems handle most of the data transmission and collection functions of manufacturing industries. The effectiveness of such systems, however, depends on their ability to solve problems regarding the prioritization of data. A four-layered framework for designing information systems that are capable of reactive problem-solving is presented.

Neural network-based agents for integrating information for production systems

Article Abstract:

Neural network-based agents used in handling manufacturing information are more advantageous than rule-based agents since their learning capabilities allows them to easily adapt to the specific informational needs of each user. Neural network-based agent technology can be easily applied in electronic bulletin boards, group decision support systems and electronic mail systems. A discussion of some approaches to integrating the technology into such systems is presented.
