Integrate to accumulate: there's been a lot of talk about developing intelligent buildings in the last ten years but the UK's first integration facility has only just emerged

Article Abstract:

The first Integrated Building Control (IBC) facility has been developed at Taylor Woodrow's headquarters in Southall. The project was sponsored by Taylor Woodrow, AMEC, Ove Arup and Martell Electronics, and a grant was awarded through the Construction Sponsorship Directorate's Partners in Technology scheme. IBC aims to coordinate the way that products are developed through the CdC engine which acts as a graphical user interface and an intelligent gateway.

Jobs for the girls: attitudes towards women wanting a career in construction are supposed to be changing but the vital statistics show just 8% of the workforce are female

Article Abstract:

The Womens' Education in Building centre (WEB) is dedicated to training women in jobs such as bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, carpentry and electrical work. director Allison Ogden realises the difficulties involved in convincing others of the potential and value of her trainees. The WEB attracts about 80 trainess each year and it is said to have 70% success rate in job placements, particularly with housing trusts.

Lighten up, it's good to talk

Article Abstract:

Lighting consultant Mark Ingram, working for lighting manufacturer Lumitron, believes that lighting contractors will not call in consultants because they cost too much. While realising that price is very important, he believes that appointing a lighting consultant can eventually save money by avoiding expensive errors and saving time.
