Intel researchers aim to think big while staying close to development

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp opened its Microcomputer Research Laboratory (MRL) at its corporate headquarters in Santa Clara, CA, as part of the semiconductor company's R&D efforts. The initiative, headed by senior VP Albert Yu, aims to keep researchers closely accustomed to business needs. MRL collaborates with several universities and other companies in different areas of research. Intel's research efforts cover such fields as visual computing, design science, advanced computer architecture and high-performance computing applications.

IBM scientists take on product responsibilities

Article Abstract:

IBM Corp has decided to take over its two small businesses engaged in infrared and graphics compression technology in an effort to ensure the relevance of R&D to overall business goals. The move addresses the challenge of nurturing the promising business ventures without affecting other operations. IBM's Research Division has been tasked to manage the two business units, namely, the Advanced Infrared Wireless Communications Group in Toronto, Ontario, and the Digital Video Products Group in Endicott, NY.

Spinoff to market technology from NEC Research Institute

The firm is being financed by an established venture capital arm and is backed up by a $27 million budget. The watermarking technology utilizes hiding data features to produce exact copies of photographs and motion pictures. Moreover, the technology can be utilized for commercial and educational opportunities.
