Internet commerce in a global marketplace

Article Abstract:

Internet commerce in a global marketplace is discussed with some focus on the chemicals industry. The attitudes and easy access seen in the US do not prevail everywhere, even where important trading partners are found. Banking and means of payment differ from place to place. Telecoms and Web access are tightly controlled in some places. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a review on the barriers to global electronic commerce. It outlines the huge potential and many of the issues. Topics include greater productivity, start-up costs, censorship, customer access and affordability, privacy, and profitability. Factors in developing countries, Latin America, China, India, Africa, Japan, and the European Union are discussed in addition to discussion of the US, the UK, and Canada.
