Introducing custom power

Article Abstract:

The concept of Custom Power for addressing quality and reliability issues related to power distribution was first introduced in a select group of engineers in 1988. However, the development of enabling technologies to implement it came only in 1995. The concept, which uses power electronics for integrated power flow control, promises to provide utility-side solutions that are more cost-effective than customer-side solutions such as surge suppressors and uninterruptible power supplies.

ISDN reaches the market

Article Abstract:

Telephone carriers' deployment of integrated services digital networks (ISDN) has begun to make the technology available to North American, European and Pacific markets. The trend is being driven by bandwidth-thirsty applications such as video telephony and private branch exchanges, lower prices for services and equipment, and new applications such as telecommuting. However, problems with configuration and equipment interoperability remain.

ISDN: from custom to commodity service

Article Abstract:

The wide range of applications and equipment for enabling integrated services digital networks (ISDN) should make it widely available soon. At present, the technology, which allows full integration of video, voice and audio over digital telephone lines, is still battling obstacles against mass deployment. These include standards for incompatible protocols and high tariffs which deter small users from subscribing to ISDN services.
