Japan's drug manufacturers edge toward globalization

Article Abstract:

The Japanese pharmaceutical industry is increasing the scope of its international operations partly because it is being forced to restructure. The government has been changing its regulatory regimes because of its desire to control health care costs. The government is also changing its favorable pricing system which was beneficial to the local industry at the expense of foreign firms. While the increase in revenues is a major factor in the industry's thrust toward globalization, Japanese drug firms can also benefit from reduced development time and availment of advanced technological competencies resulting from collaboration with foreign drug firms.

The inferior quality of poor managers is likewise cited as a major hindrance in the development fo science and technology in the country.
