Law firm pioneers explore new territory

Article Abstract:

Three law firms trained in total quality management (TQM) have initiated a quality improvement precedence in the legal service. Inspired by Stephen Covey's ideas, the firms have formulated a mission statement and incorporated a win-win compensation system into their culture. Quality improvement teams have been set up to pursue the visionary goals of TQM in areas such as attorney responsiveness and accessibility to clients. Despite such pioneering efforts, inducting TQM principles is proving problematic in legal firm cultures resistant to change.

Service organizations increasingly adopt Baldrige model

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for service-based organizations to adopt the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria model of high performance. These organizations are undertaking self-assessment against this model to assist in identifying their strengths and potential for improvement. They are also applying for the growing number of Baldrige-based quality awards that exist at state and local level. This trend is helping to foster continuous improvement.

Lawyers find a partner in quality

Article Abstract:

A quality-of-law project was conducted to help law firms provide better legal services to clients. The project involved surveying four client groups about their lawyer performance requirements. Results show that only 55% of business and 40% of nonbusiness respondents were satisfied with their lawyers' abilities. About 90% also cite honesty and integrity as the most important trait of lawyers.
