Learning Search Strategies through Discrimination

Article Abstract:

The strategy acquisition governed by experimentation (SAGE) system for learning as a result of experience is presented. SAGE begins with weak general operators, generates alternatives through trial and error, uses discrimination techniques to strengthen variants and modifies its solutions. The incremental learning process of SAGE mimics human learning. Other strategy learning systems are reviewed and compared to SAGE. Further possible extensions to SAGE are suggested. SAGE has been successfully tested in three different domains and been shown to be capable of learning useful heuristics.

Corporate renewal through cooperation and critical technologies

Article Abstract:

Business investment in technology is vital for survival into the 21st century. Material sciences, energy systems, electronic and information sciences, biosciences and manufacturing and engineering sciences are resulting in rapid change which necessitates continuous business restructuring. Businesses have to be aware of the global environment and remain flexible. Corporate renewal needs to be based on: current awareness on corporate global changes; continual analyses of cost/performance operations; investment in state-of-the art technology and development of new systems.

Age discrimination: downsizing without lawsuits

Article Abstract:

Engineering companies limit the growth of their staff size through attrition and reductions in force (RIFs). These firms often have to lay-off employees to manage excessive personnel costs. However, poorly implemented RIFs often lead to expensive claims of employment discrimination coming from employees who are over 40 years old. It is important to comply with proper statutory requirements to avoid the complicated process.
