The nightmare of Tlatelolco

Article Abstract:

The events surrounding the demonstration at Tlatelolco, Mexico, on Oct 2, 1968, has remained a mystery even in 1998. More than 10,000 people, mostly students, gathered that night to demand greater democracy in Mexico. Soldiers apparently attacked shortly after 6 pm, and unofficial estimates placed the number of those who were killed outright at 600, with many to be subsequently tortured and imprisoned while some others were to be killed. If a precise account of the events is lacking, it is because the press has generally been supportive of an oppressive government since 1968.

Les cites interdites

Article Abstract:

Police in parts of France including Tarterets, Monatataire, and Mureaux are having difficulty with disorder amongst young people. When the police arrive in Tarterets they are frequently attacked with stones, and have to withdraw if they can, or wait for reinforcements, and their presence can lead to worse disorder, which suggests that it is impossible to enforce the law. In fact, the young people consider Tarterets their exclusive territory, according to one young person, Abdel. Article text is in French.

Year 2000 problem: the millennium bug

Article Abstract:

The Year 2000 problem will have a severe impact on businesses. The inability of the computer to recognize the 21st century will result in logic errors, data corruption and program failures. Many companies are expected to be able to solve the millennium bug and avoid problems in their critical functions but they may not be able to meet their legal and statutory obligations as a result of the problem. An eight-step action plan is recommended to help businesses deal with this problem.
