MEMS in space

Article Abstract:

The satellite industry is poised for fundamental change because of potential uses of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The term refers to tiny micromachined devices. MEMS could open the way to inexpensive, high-reliability mass-produced satellites. A senior scientist with an aerospace R&D organization foresees a time when satellite subsystems, highly resistant to radiation and vibration, will be fabricated like we now make chips for PCs.

Super nets for supercomputers

Article Abstract:

High-speed data networks, also known as grids, are being developed to interconnect supercomputers and make their power available at researchers' desktops. For example, the Grid Physics Network (GriPhyN), funded by the National Science Foundation, makes 'virtual data' available to scientists. Such data combines raw data and the results of previous investigations and additional computation as needed.
