Microprocessors circa 2000

Article Abstract:

An extrapolation from the historical trends in microprocessor performance forecasts microprocessors with 50 million transistors forming as many as four integrated multiprocessor elements with a combined performance of over two billion million instructions per second. Backwards compatibility with current microprocessors is likely, as well as with general-purpose computer families of the major vendors. Other predicted attributes of the 'Micro 2000' include: average clock rates in the 250-MHz range, sub-cycle instruction execution, 64-bit data path width and power supply voltages as low as 2.5v. Major challenges include: the design and testability of such dense chips, ensuring manufacturing reliability and interconnection.
