The advancements achieved in the field of building management system technologies have culminated in a setup that integrates all building systems and equipment. Previously, building systems such as fire alarms, security, telecommunications, power distribution and lighting control were stand alone systems. In 1987, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, formed a committee which established a standard protocol which resulted in the integration of building systems and equipment.

Article Abstract:

Direct-digital-control (DDC) interoperability, which are offered by both LonWorks and BACnet, will allow the manufacturers to concentrate on the creation of temeprature control equipment. Achieving DDC interoperability is a feat that requires a number of conditions. These include restricting the number of options, conformance testing, the approval of an independent, objective third party, restricted DDC software architecture and the establishment of standard specifications.
