Motivating your R&D staff: ten basic tenets form a body of practical knowledge for generating the excitement that is the essence of motivation for technical people

Article Abstract:

Ten basic tenets for managers in motivating employees in research and development organizations are described. These include the awareness of the difficulty in producing work excitement, the need for maintaining a 'positive tension' and the recognition of the hedonistic nature inherent in all individuals. While managers should understand the individual's desire for self-protection, they should balance this with the desire for self-enhancement. Managers must also recognize the importance of maintaining credibility to effectively use expectations in motivating employees.

Arguments for long-term research include its ability to develop new sources of profitability. Other reasons include links to technology development, aid in recruiting quality staff, the discovery of proprietary technology, participation in the scientific community and effects on growth.
