New frontiers for Detroit's big three

Article Abstract:

Electronic innovations in 1989 cars from GM, Ford and Chrysler are designed to please both drivers and technicians. Among new features is a 'head-up display' from GM that projects information onto the windshield of some Oldsmobile Cutlass and Pontiac Turbo Grand Prix models. A fully adaptive, electronically controlled, four-speed automatic transaxle combining transmission and differential gearing is available from Chrysler. Buick has an improved Visual Information Center. Some 1989 Cadillacs have a fast-acting heated windshield system. The Cadillac Allante, Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar have new variable-assist steering systems. Chrysler is working with IBM to develop a mechanics' Service Bay System, a series of logic trees that work in conjunction with on-board diagnostics.
