Not the best years of their lives

Article Abstract:

The early years of the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC), whose publications celebrated their 50th anniversary in May 1996, were full of troubles. The quality profession in the initial years constituted a group of people with ideas to improve the production and inspection of products. Success for the professionals came slowly since quantity, more than quality, had the first priority for manufacturers. Success at the quality control system of a wire mill was a stepping stone, and later a film and an article in the Dec 1949 issue of the Fortune magazine came as turning points for the ASQC.
