ADF battle in Florida

Article Abstract:

A controversial bottle bill is set to be implemented in Florida in July, 1993. Unlike other bottle bills that regulate containers depending on the beverages they hold, Florida's Advance Disposal fee (ADF) mandates a fee for all kinds of containers irrespective of its contents. Containers that do not have a recycling rate of 50% or higher as of Jan, 1993 are charged with a one cent fee. The fee goes up to two cents if the container is not recycled at a 50% rate by Oct, 1995. The battle over the law lies on whether the fee collection should be done by the retailers or the wholesalers. Other concerns arise regarding markets and the redemption process.

Novel battery outperforms others

Article Abstract:

A novel rechargeable battery composed of thin films of lithium and pyrite that are separated by a film of composite polymers has been developed by researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel. The battery is thinner than a razor blade and can operate between 90 and 135 degrees C. Its solid electrolyte design and extra-thin coating of pyrite allows the batter to ave a life cycle of more than 500 charges and discharges. The cathode coating also reduces the charging rate to two hours instead of the 7 to 14 hours with conventional lead-acid batteries.
