One step back, two steps forward

Article Abstract:

Participating teams in the American Society for Quality Control and Institute for Healthcare Improvement program to prevent vehicle injuries have different experiences in implementing the initiative in their respective communities. The team from Allentown, PA, has developed the 'Vince and Larry' and 'Buckle-Up Squirrel' initiatives, which have been designed to promote seat belt use among children. The team from Fredericksburg, VA, has designed its programs to reduce the number of motor vehicle injuries among adolescents.

Safety on the highways

Article Abstract:

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement established the Community Based Breakthrough Series Collaborative on the Prevention of Motor Vehicle Injuries in Mar 1996. The project was aimed at applying quality-based principles to decrease traffic accidents. The project was then applied in 10 cities by teams made up of volunteers, health care delivery systems and local ASQ members with varying results.

Applying continuous improvement to community health

Article Abstract:

The American Society for Quality and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement developed the community health improvement model aimed at reducing traffic accidents in 10 cities. The success of the model is attributed to four elements, including demonstrating improvements and giving local groups the responsibility for continuous improvement. Applications of the model to other community health issues are described.
